These are not isolated cases but a true epidemic, doctors warn, urging caution against the excessive use of antibiotics. The problem of antibiotic resistance today affects billions of people around the world. It cannot be ignored, as it can lead to extremely serious situations in which severe illnesses become impossible to treat. The responsibility often lies not only with patients themselves but also with their doctors. Let’s take a closer look at when antibiotics fail to work and why.
The key rule is to determine what kind of infection we are dealing with – whether it is caused by a virus or by bacteria. Antibiotics do not work against viruses because their role is to destroy pathogenic bacteria or to inhibit their growth and reproduction. When antibiotics are used to treat viral infections, they can destroy beneficial bacterial flora and contribute to the development of bacterial resistance. The consequences can be alarming – we may reach a point where there is nothing left to treat us with. Important: Use only antibiotics prescribed by your doctor.
When a bacterial infection occurs, it is worth checking which antibiotic will be the most effective. This can be determined through an antibiogram – a microbiological test that shows how sensitive the pathogenic bacteria are to specific antibiotics. A properly selected antibiotic, taken in the right doses and for the prescribed duration, offers a good chance of quick recovery. Remember: Use only antibiotics appropriate for the identified bacteria. Get a diagnostic test done.
Patients themselves are often responsible for drug resistance. Even with an accurate diagnosis and a well-chosen treatment plan, many fail to follow their doctor’s instructions. As soon as they start feeling better, they stop taking the medication. They also forget to take doses at the prescribed times. As a result, the infection returns, and the antibiotic often no longer works. This is important: Do not disregard your doctor’s advice.
These simple rules can protect us, as patients, from serious consequences for our health and even our lives. The World Health Organization has included drug resistance among the ten most serious global health problems. Let’s remember – antibiotics are not candy. Use them only when they are truly necessary and always according to your doctor’s directions.
