What is antibiotic resistance and why is it a threat?

Antibiotic resistance (bacterial resistance to an antibiotic) occurs when bacteria adapt and develop resistance to antibiotics, causing these drugs to become less effective – or even ineffective – against infections. One of the main factors driving antibiotic resistance is the overuse and improper use of antibiotics in both humans and animals. The discoverer of the first antibiotic, Alexander Fleming, had already warned about microorganisms developing resistance. Failing to act to halt antibiotic resistance could leave us unable to treat common bacterial infections.

improper use of an antibiotic

the bacterium becomes resistant

the antibiotic grows less effective

diseases spread faster and are harder to treat

What are the reasons for the emergence of antibiotic resistance?

Overuse or improper use of antibiotics in medicine, agriculture, and veterinary medicine.

Inadequate infection-prevention measures

Failure to follow the prescribing doctor’s instructions

Self-medication or stopping therapy too soon

Antibiotics do not treat viral diseases!

THE TIME FOR ACTION IS NOW TOGETHER WE CAN FIGHT ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE

The best weapon to combat antibiotic resistance is accurate diagnostics.

Our Educational Activities

Bacteromic focuses not only on developing a unique system to identify bacterial resistance but also on educational initiatives that raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

We believe investing in young minds is an investment in everyone’s future.

We educate to protect health – because knowledge really can save lives.

Pharmacy Museum / Warsaw Museum Branch

In 2024 Bacteromic partnered with the Antonina Leśniewska Pharmacy Museum in Warsaw. During workshops for children and teenagers, museum educators highlight the problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Through this partnership, 50 museum lessons – including hands-on sessions on drug resistance – were conducted.

In addition, as part of this cooperation, the Museum has prepared a new museum lesson for secondary schools on antibiotic resistance.

From bacterium to drug – why don’t antibiotics always work?

Participants will trace the history of antibacterial compounds from antiquity to today, learn where bacteria occur in everyday life and what precautions to take. They will also explore antibiotic types and examine one of modern medicine’s biggest challenges – the growing problem of resistance.

Children's University Foundation

Bacteromic also supports educational activities of the Children’s University Foundation. In 2024 the company co-financed the projects “Planet of Health” and “Young Scientists: How Much Chemistry and Physics Is Around Us?” These programs help children learn about and  understand health topics so they can make responsible decisions tomorrow.
